GREAT SERIES for students

Morris Bishop's surveys are excellent. The literary selections in his anthologies are well chosen, and the contextual information and footnotes facilitate the reading process for students.

As a hobby, I had been reading many French novels (translated into English) and wanted a resource book to learn more about French literature throughout the centuries in historical context. Although this series has summaries about each period, most of the book includes original writings that are all in the French language (no translations). For someone who simply wants to learn about French Literature in general (and isn't a student "majoring" in French Literature), these books will be quite frustrating. It is impossible to truly understand the English previews contained in the books without being able to read the untranslated French works that are included in the chapters. Although understandably the original French versions are of course the best, anyone who wants to learn about French literature generally will be upset to have it presented this way.
